Bec is a mother of two young boys and lives in Auckland, NZ. She has an 18 year career as an illustrator and designer behind her and through Studio Bec, she continues to evolve her artistic voice.
Rooted in a deep passion for painting, her practice extends beyond traditional canvases into surface pattern design, allowing her art to be experienced in new and immersive ways.
A sense of ambiguity in location invites the viewer to overlay their own memories taken out into the world and interpretations.
What inspires and influences your work?
“I am very much inspired by the ever-changing landscapes of NZ, as well as the intricate details that emerge when looking closely - things like the subtle colour variations in the lora and fauna and rock formations.”
What do you create and tell us a little bit about your creative process...
“I create minimal abstract landscape paintings that focus on the interplay of light, colour and movement. I paint with watercolour acrylics and add detail with colour pencil and pan pastels. I love the way the watercolour moved on the canvas, and the subtle detail that pencil provides. Along side things, I experiment with watercolour floral artworks that translate to fabric. The idea of artwork extending beyond the canvas and being taken out into the world gives me a sense of artistic freedom and playfulness."
